II Corinthians

Paul tells the Corinthians he is jealous for them with a godly jealousy — and afraid their minds could be led away from simple, pure devotion to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:3). Sunday's message walks that letter in five parts: our encouragement, our existence, our exhortation, our enlargement, and our earthen existence.

It starts in affliction — afflicted but not crushed, conflicts without and fears within — and with a God who comforts the depressed. Then the house not made with hands beyond this tent (2 Corinthians 5:1), the temple of the living God, giving that is cheerful rather than grudging, and a war not waged according to the flesh.

It ends where Paul ends: a man caught up to the third heaven, who heard words he was not permitted to speak.
